What to expect on the 2 Day Pelican Bay / Caya Costa
There are those places that you dream about… Pelican Bay is one of them. It’s a good sail from Fort Myers Beach around Sanibel Island and the barrier islands. Enjoying the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and watching the coastline moving behind you. We will re-enter the Intracoastal Waterway at Boca Grande.
When we reach Pelican Bay, we find a good place to anchor and then drop the hook for the night. Once we settle in, we jump in the dingy and head over to the island of Cayo Costa. The only people living on this 7.5 mile island are a couple of rangers. There’s a trail that heads across the mile wide island to the Gulf side where you can enjoy a walk on a sandy beach and experience the way these islands were hundreds of years ago.
The evening will be astounding… Away from the light pollution of the city, we will have a chance to star gaze and watch the heavens. It’s quite a site. I’ll prepare dinner and we will check the charts, tides and weather for the next day.
In the morning, we’ll have breakfast and maybe a last walk on the beach and do some exploring. Then it’s off for a short run to Cabbage Key for a quick lunch
After lunch we cruise down the Intracoastal Waterway, south, through the islands. We will see dolphins, local birds and other wild life. Five hours from Cabbage Key, we will dock back at Salty Sam’s Marina.
This package is one of my favorite trips. You will see a lot and have some great sailing time as well as the experience of spending a night in a place you can only get to by boat.
A real taste of cruising that is within everyone’s budget.
